Rockne Freitas has been appointed to a three-year term as chancellor of the University of Hawaii West Oahu campus.

He succeeds Gene Awakuni, who has been chancellor at West Oahu since March 2005.

Freitas’ appointment was approved Thursday by the UH Board of Regents.

His annual salary will be $226,128 —  $15,128 more than his predecessor’s.

Freitas, well known in UH circles, is currently UH vice president for student affairs and university relations.

Freitas will work alongside Awakuni from March to April on academic affairs prior to Awakuni’s retirement.

He will become chief executive of the West Oahu campus in Kapolei beginning May 1.

Also at today’s meeting, Awakuni was awarded the title of chancellor emeritus and appointed senior adviser to the president from May 1 until his retirement in early July.
