Authorities investigating death of Halawa inmate

Prison authorities are investigating an apparent suicide that happened Monday at Halawa Correctional Facility’s special holding unit.

The medical examiner has been called in to determine how 32-year-old  Jonathan Ibana died at the facilty. He was pronounced dead at 4:10 p.m. Monday.

Ibana, who was serving a 20-year sentence for second-degree attempted murder, was found at 4:09 p.m. in his cell.  

Honolulu police and the state Public Safety Department’s internal affairs office are conducting an investigation.

Ibana’s death is the second this week at an Oahu prison.

Cyril Chung, also known as Cyrl Chung, was beaten to death by another inmate at Oahu Community Correctional Center on Saturday.

Joseph Tui Jr., has been charged with first-degree murder.
