Matson’s youngest ship, Maunalei, was bought in 2006 at a cost of $155 million. Matson plans to buy two more ships in the next two to five years at an estimated cost of roughly $400 million.

Matson Inc. said it will decrease its fuel-related shipping surcharge by 3.5 percentage points, from 43.5 percent to 40 percent for its Hawaii service on Sunday because of recently moderated bunker fuel prices.

The ocean cargo transportation firm announced the move today, and also said its rate for Guam, Micronesia and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands will decrease by the same amount, from 40 percent 36.5 percent.

The reduction will translate to a savings of $80 to $140 on the cost to ship a container for most customers, Matson said.

Next week’s decrease follows a 4.5 percentage point increase that took effect in October.
