Maui police arrested and charged a 22-year-old Pukalani man with manslaughter and other charges in connection with a head-on crash in Kula last year that killed five people.

Libert Qalivere is being held on $750,000 bail after being charged with five counts of manslaughter, one count of negligent injury, two counts of inattention to driving and operating a vehicle while under the influence.

Officers arrested Qalivere at his home on Tuesday morning.

At the time, police said speed and alcohol were factors in the March 25, 2012 collision on the Kula Highway near Noholoa Place. The five victims were ejected from a Dodge Neon that crossed the center line and crashed into a blue 2003 Suzuki Aerio.

Qalivere, who was wearing his seat belt and was the driver of the Neon, was the only survivor from the car.

Arriving officers found three men and a woman dead at the scene. A fifth man died en route to Maui Memorial Hospital, police said.

The three occupants in the Suzuki — all residents of Pukalani — went to Maui Memorial Hospital in stable condition.

I think living with killing your friends (or anyone) is a lifetime of punishment (and it's free). Most 21 year olds are dumb enough to drink and drive... it's just that most of those incidents don't end with four people dead.

Thanks for a decent, rational viewpoint. He'll do significant time but his real punishment will be the memories and regrets that will haunt him forever.

Fine. Send him to Kaho'olawe where he can reflect daily on killing his friends, and won't continue to suckle on the Teat of Society while in prison.

Wow, he looks like a winner. There were five passengers in a Neon, six total? They must have been really small. And yes, he'll probably get a slap on the wrist.

It took them one year to arrest and charge him with this crime? Talk about the slow wheels of justice.
