Hawaiian Airlines hires mainland PR firm

By Star-Advertiser staff

Hawaiian Airlines has replaced Honolulu-based McNeil Wilson Communications with a mainland firm to do most of its public relations.

Edelman, the world’s largest PR firm with 66 offices, including in New York and San Francisco, took over the contract on March 1.

McNeil Wilson had handled the Hawaiian account for more than 15 years.

Hawaiian said the launch of its New York route precipitated the change when the company recognized it needed more local support in key mainland markets. Hawaiian began flying to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York last June.

“McNeil Wilson has been a good partner and we will continue to work with them on media blitzes and other projects,” Hawaiian spokesman Keoni Wagner said.

How unfortunate. There is so little about Hawaiian Airlines today that remains "Hawaiian". Their new uniforms are made by a mainland company, customer service/call center is in the Philippines, and now their PR is gone too. About the only thing "Hawaiian" about the airline today is their name and a handful of flight attendants.

Hawaiian Airlines is becoming an internationally known brand. Edelman will help Hawaiian's brand awareness and brand image to be managed more consistently in global markets. MW is too narrowly focused.

Who would have thought that a little airline from Hawaii could become as big as they are today. You get outside help with big picture thinking and yeah they have out sourced with fast moving, hard working people but it also gave more people in Hawaii a chance to get semi secure jobs instead of having no airline left in Hawaii. I mean who owns Island Air now? and Go!? But Hawaiian seems pretty damn solid now. I have more than 75 family and friends working for them. Just don't keep raising air fares.

A great upgrade in PR. Local marketing companies do 2nd rate work as compared to the bigtime PR firms.

I'll fly Hawaiian and never fly Go! Look at what Go! did. It was like Go! was driving a car, drove alongside Aloha Airlines and ran them into a ditch. Once Aloha Airlines died on the operating table, Go! had the gall to try to be renamed ALOHA AIRLINES. Yup. Go! also attempted identity theft. So before you try to badmouth Hawaii Airlines any further just look at the competing offering and, like me, you'll keep on flying Hawaiian Airlines exclusively. Go! Airlines to me is very pilau.
