UH Warriors will host Air Force in CIT basketball tournament

By Stephen Tsai

LAST UPDATED: 11:51 p.m. HST, Mar 17, 2013

With an assist from its former head coach, the University of Hawaii basketball team has been been invited to the CollegeInsider.com postseason tournament.

The Rainbow Warriors' season was on the brink of ending after a first-round loss to UC Irvine in the Big West Tournament. Instead, the Rainbow Warriors will be hosting Air Force in the CIT's first round on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Riley Wallace, chairman of the CIT selection committee, said four teams that had signed promissory contracts to play in the CIT were invited to the NCAA or NIT, opening a spot for UH.

A deciding factor?

"That's my school," Wallace said of UH.

Good Ol' Riley Wallace, great to have on our back pocket, eh? Doesn't take away from our lack of quality quards on the team but we knew that going into this season so no squawking needed.

Just like the Hawaii Toilet Bowl, now we have a guaranteed basketball tournament to go to. It better not count as a way to get extended pay.

Does Hawaii have to pay the $35,000 fee to play in the CIT tourney???? Please, if UH doesn't have to pay that fee, then maybe participating in this tournament is a reward but if UH has to pay that fee just to play in that tournament, then it would be just a waste of monies like that concert fund-raising fiasco!!!!!

Hawaii hosting so you would pay a fee its the same as the nit you pay bigger money to be the host team. so either one, if you want to stay home then you pay, that's not bad.

Or, fans could show up at the game, cheer the team on and give them the edge they need to be victorious. Lots of fans = ticket and concession funds that make the game profitable for the university and the tournament organizers. Oh, and the team gets to redeem itself on the court and hopefully will notch a few more wins. Let's focus on the positive here people...

Just like the Hawaii Bowl, when a bowl appearance is not earned, create one, now Hawaii has a basketball tournament for the unearned.

It's not the big show or even the NIT, but it's a chance to keep the season going and prove that they're a better team than they showed in the BW Tournament. I'll be there to support them. I hope lots of other fans show up, too.

Let's hope they don't put it on TV, unless Oceanic ponies up the $$ to cover the entry fee or expenses.

$35,000 each for UH and Airforce to play in the CIT? UH provides the venue? They play this Wednesday? OK, I have a better deal for UH. UH and Air Force play this wednesday in the CRT at the Sheriff instead. I run the CRT (the Critical Reader Tournament). Pay me $30,000 each (heck I'm feeling benevolent. The only have to pay me $25,000 each). Their game will be the CHAMPIONSHIP GAME of the tournament. They will be in the FINALS of the CRT! Second place is GUARANTEED! I'll have both a Championship and Runner Up trophies made too.

I agree!! This tournament is only for losers and the only person smiling and laughing his way to the bank is riley wallace. A.D. dept. and the university talk about the big deficit in the dept. and this is one of the reasons where the $35,000 could be better spent on other athletic resources than throwing this monies away for a team that is pathetic and doesn't deserve to be in any tournament. Once again, I repeat, THIS TOURNAMENT IS FOR LOSERS!!!
