Hawaii Hilo men’s basketball coach Jeff Law will be leaving the Vulcans after 15 seasons for the head men’s basketball job at Western New Mexico.

“Every assistant coach looks for that break and I’m very grateful the University and the Hilo community gave me mine,” said Law, who was an assistant with the University of Hawaii under Riley Wallace.. “I’ve learned much over the past 15 years about myself, coaching and people but it’s time that I move on. “Hilo holds a special place for anyone who has been here and it will with me.

“I think it was a time for a change for me and for the (UHH) program. I will be going to work for my best friend in the world.”

Law will be replacing Mark Coleman, who has been the Mustangs men’s basketball coach since 2003 and added the athletic director’s position in 2011. Coleman will remain the athletic director at the Silver City, N.M., school. 

The longest tenured coach in UHH basketball history, Law finishes his Vulcan career with a 208-188 (.525) record and is the Vulcans’ second all-time winningest coach. He is just one of two coaches to make the 200-victory plateau joining veteran Jimmy Yagi (218 wins).

The Vulcans made their first NCAA Division II regional in 2002-03. Two years later, UHH won the PacWest title and was No. 8 in the national coaches poll.
