Police identify Kauai pedestrian accident victim, arrest driver

Kauai police identified the 26-year-old Waimea pedestrian killed in Lihue after she was hit by a sports utility vehicle Saturday, and arrested the driver of the SUV for negligent homicide, a Kauai County spokeswoman said Monday.
Jill Garnett died at the scene of the accident on Kamualii Highway near the Kipu Road junction, police said.
Officers arrested the 82-year-old driver of the SUV that hit her for second-degree negligent homicide Saturday and released him pending further investigation, police said.
Garnett was walking along the eastbound shoulder of Kaumualii Highway, heading west, when she was struck by the eastbound SUV at about 8:55 a.m.
It has not been determined if speed, drugs, or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.
The death is the second traffic fatality of the year for Kauai.
