Maui County authorities today charged a Molokai man with second-degree murder and other offenses in the shooting death of his girlfriend Wednesday night in Kawela, Molokai.

Marlin Lavoie, 33, of Honouliwai, was also charged with four counts of various firearms offenses and reckless endangering. Bail was set at $170,000.

Police said the victim, 24-year-old Malia Kahalewai, had gone to a friend’s home to get away from Lavoie, whom police described as abusive. Lavoie went to the friend’s home and shot and killed her in front of at least one of their four children, according to witness reports to police.

Police said Kahalewai died of a single gunshot wound in her chest. The shooting was reported at 9:59 p.m. at the Kawela Barns Apartments at 2626 Kamehameha V Highway.

Lavoie has a history of schizophrenia, domestic abuse and violent crime, court records show.

Lavoie surrendered to police just before 8 a.m. Thursday.
