Fire destroys pavilion at Maui wildlife refuge

Maui fire investigators are trying to determine the origin of an early morning fire Thursday that caused $20,000 worth of damage and destroyed an open pavilion at the Kealia Wildlife Refuge on the island’s southern coast.

Fire crews from  Kihei and Kahului  responded to the 2:26 a.m. alarm. The fire at the pavilion, built with timber and recycled plastic planks, was brought under control by 3 a.m. and extinguished at 3:30 a.m.. The structure was unoccupied.

 The refuge is located between Kīhei and Maalaea.
