Police identified the 41-year-old California man who drowned in waters off of Kapaa Wednesday as Cristian Lung of Castro Valley.

At about 2:50 p.m., fire rescue responded to a report of a swimmer in distress fronting a vacant lot next to the Plantation Hale Hotel. Bystanders were attempted to assist Lung when firefighters arrived.

They brought him to shore and performed CPR, according to a news release from the Kauai Fire Department.

Lung was then transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His death is the 11th drowning to occur on Kauai this year.
