Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a two-alarm fire Saturday night at an Aiea apartment.

Fire crews were called to the two-story Wailuna Apartment Complex just after 9:30 p.m, where flames and smoke were coming from a second-floor unit and first-floor garage port. Crews got the fire under control within 15 minutes, a fire official said.

Two adults were at the apartment, but made it out with no injuries. However, the homeowner's pet cat died.

The homeowner said shortly after a friend came to visit her, they noticed flames coming from the engine compartment of his car, said a fire official. They attempted to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher, but were unsuccessful.

No other units were damaged. Damage is estimated at $200,000.

After having lived in the same residence for 50 years, we decided to move to Aiea. I do not know how close this fire was to where we are, however, we hear lots of sirens nightly.

Pali Momi Hospital in Pearl Ridge is close to Aiea. That might account for the siren noise.
