Kayak fisherman posts video of shark encounter off Waianae

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 05:05 p.m. HST, Apr 10, 2013

Maili resident Isaac Brumaghim has had sharks take his fish but never one as jumpy and close to him.

Brumaghim, 37, said he was fishing during a fishing tournament about two miles offshore Waianae on Sunday when a shark took his fish and jumped out of the water about nine feet from the rear of the kayak.

“I’ve never had a shark jump from behind me,” he said.

Brumaghim belongs to a small but growing number of kayak fishing people who enjoy the open ocean sport.

He captured a video of the event from a camera mounted on the bow of his kayak and posted it on YouTube.

That's what I was thinking. Mano was in the area all day and didn't threaten him. Mano was only hungry for the fish. Isaac kept on fishing after the incident. Good luck in future fishing days. 'Aumakua keeping an eye on you.
