Flood watch continues for Kauai

A thunderstorm brought heavy rain to the southeast side of Kauai, dropping about 2 inches of rain on Kalaheo Monday night.

The National Weather Service dropped a flood advisory for the southeast side of Kauai. But a flash flood watch continues until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Poipu got 1.9 inches of rain in the 24-hour period ending at 8 p.m. Mount Waialeale recorded about 1.5 inches and more than an inch fell on Port Allen, Kokee, Waiakoali, Hanapepe, the Waialua Ditch and other areas.

Offshore of Kauai, a strong thunderstorm south of Kauai generated high winds and seas, lightning and even small hail.

The potential for heavy rain will likely continue on Kauai through Wednesday.

Oahu is on the edge of  the weather system responsible for the wet weather conditions. There's a chance of heavy showers on the island, but no watches or advisories are in effect. Some heavy showers fell Monday morning.

Overnight and this morning, Bellows Air Force Station saw the most rain in the state, with about 1.2 inches falling during the 24-hour period ending at 2 p.m. Moanalua recorded 1.1 inches a little less than an inch of rain fell at the Halawa Tunnel and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach.

Strong winds from the southwest are also keeping a high wind warning in effect for Hawaii island summits through Tuesday morning.

The southerly winds are bringing up vog from Hawaii island. Hazy conditions are expected to continue through Tuesday for Oahu and Kauai.

Trade winds are expected to slowly return to the state Wednesday and Thursday.
