The Hawaii House of Representatives recognized Honolulu police officer Kerwin Unten and four other Aiea residents for heroism Thursday for rescuing a couple from a burning car on Feb. 8, police said.

Unten and the four other residents heard cries for help from the parking structure of their building. A car was on fire with two residents inside, Honolulu police said.

Unten, who was off-duty, and the other rescuers forced open the vehicle, climbed inside and pulled a man and his wife, who was wheelchair-bound, to safety, police said.

They received certificates of recognition in the House chambers.
