A 33-year-old Lahaina man died this afternoon after the bicycle he was riding collided with a commercial van on Honoapiilani Highway.

According to police, the rider, identified as Gary-Dean Kahunanui, was traveling west on Kapunakea Street around 12:14 p.m., entered the intersection of Honoapiilani Highway against a red light and was struck by a northbound Freightliner box van operated by a 52-year-old man.

Kahunanui, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene of the crash. The driver of the van was not injured.

Police rerouted traffic off of the highway for about three hours while an investigation was conducted.

This was Maui County’s fifth traffic fatality of the year, compared to 10 at the same time last year.
