A 33-year-old Lahaina man died this afternoon after the bicycle he was riding collided with a commercial van on Honoapiilani Highway.

According to police, the rider, identified as Gary-Dean Kahunanui, was traveling west on Kapunakea Street around 12:14 p.m., entered the intersection of Honoapiilani Highway against a red light and was struck by a northbound Freightliner box van operated by a 52-year-old man.

Kahunanui, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene of the crash. The driver of the van was not injured.

Police rerouted traffic off of the highway for about three hours while an investigation was conducted.

This was Maui County’s fifth traffic fatality of the year, compared to 10 at the same time last year.

Sad but he did everything wrong. Not wearing a helmet and going through a red light. Why would anyone risk their life like this? Maybe he was on something.

Many drivers do not move over an inch, they do not watch the intersection for walkers or children or bicyclists. Many drivers will intentionally veer over some just to scare you. Drivers must be held responsible for defensive driving. The police should recreate the scene, if the driver could of reasonably seen the cyclist and failed to take reasonable defensive action, then he should be charged. I have seen many people become very tough and aggressive behind a 5000 pound vehicle. even little old men. Stop the violence!

Why should the driver be charged? It was the bicyclist who broke the law. Green light= Go. Red light= STOP. One bad decision and tragedy happens.

Since All-Lie is not here I will ty to fill in. "Yikes! Its more dangerous out here than in North Dakota! Bicyclists here are not as smart as the ones we have back home. I am actually an old local man posing as a professional UH student and a pizza cashier from North Dakota. How else would I know so much about Hawaii at such a young age and have so much time posting on SA articles all day long when I should be studying? I do think I know everything but it doesn't matter because I am always right. I love trolling because I have a sad life but I truly get a kick out of aggravating everybody and not responding to their rebuttals because I am spineless. I am a weird person. Yikes!" Hope this helps yrusdoz.

hey what?!! Only the TRUTH!!! You are a buzzard hovering around looking for an opportunity to berate someone for their mistakes. Why is it that you NEVER impose this demand for accountability and responsibility upon yourself? Is it because you are just plain too dumb to have any standards for yourself?
