Fireworks illuminate the sky during Fourth of July festivities at Maunalua Bay in East Oahu. Organizers are hoping to raise $50
Maunalua Communities Foundation said it will hold the sixth annual Independence Day at Maunalua Bay Festival, although no fireworks are planned unless a donor steps forward.
The group needs a donor or donors to provide about $45,000 to cover the cost of fireworks, event chairwoman Dianne Glei said.
“We know the community will be disappointed, but we just cannot go forward with fireworks this year knowing that it will put us in the red,” Glei said in a news release. “Should an angel donor(s) come forth by June 1 we have the option to add the fireworks back in.”
The event will be from noon to 7 p.m. at Maunalua Bay Beach Park. Glei said it have entertainment by such artists as Maunalua, Hawaiian cultural activities including hula, a keiki bike parade, art projects, near-water activities, the traditional watermelon-eating contest and a barbecue.
Supporters are the City and County of Honolulu, Bubbies Koko Marina, Outback Steakhouse, Koko Marina 76, the Hawaii Kai Marina Community Association, Koko Marina Center, American Savings Bank Hawaii Kai, Kamehameha Schools and Hawaii American Water.
