A Makaha surfer got a chance to thank the lifeguards who saved his life on March 5.

Four lifeguards received the Ocean Safety Merit Award Friday for their actions in saving 44-year-old Fred Klettke in waters off Makaha Beach Park, the Ocean Safety Division said in a news release.

Klettke suffered a surfing injury and was unresponsive and not breathing when lifeguards and fellow surfers pulled him from the water.

Westside lifeguards Bouvey Bradbury, Lt. Mac Hall, Nolan Keaulana, who was off-duty, and Hall Damon performed CPR and were able to revive him

Klettke was at the award ceremony and has resumed surfing.
