The head of one of Hawaii’s largest information technology companies has been named as the city’s next director of information technology by Mayor Kirk Caldwell.

Mark D. Wong is founder of Commercial Data Systems, which specializes in large systems for major corporations, as well federal, state and local governments.

CDS, which Wong founded in 1986 and sold in 2012, was ranked no. 89 in Hawaii Business magazine’s Top 250 companies in 2011. It has offices in 13 states.

Wong received a bachelor of arts in computer science from Yale University and is a graduate of Iolani School.

Caldwell, in a release announcing the appointment Monday, called Wong’s appointment “a major hire.”

The mayor added: “We are very fortunate to have his knowledge and ability as we modernize the city’s outdated IT infrastructure and streamline the Honolulu.gov web site.”

If I recall, Commercial Data was run completely into the ground by 2012, so bad it could raise money at all and had to sell off its bits and pieces. I know at one time it was a growing enterprise but it tanked big time. I guess that's appropriate experience, eh?

He seems way overqualified and most likely way overpaid for a city job, where he will be heading up government workers who will complain and file grievances with the Union if they are asked to do anything differently than they did 30 years ago. Waste of taxpayer money.
