Te'o practices with veterans at Chargers' camp

SAN DIEGO >> Manti Te’o has gone through his first practice with San Diego Chargers veterans today, and by all accounts he didn’t embarrass himself.

He was matched up against tight end Antonio Gates a few times, which quarterback Philip Rivers calls “a quick welcome, Day 1.”

Te’o and other Chargers went through the first day of organized team activities, which are practices in helmets, jerseys and shorts, but no pads.

Te’o, the linebacker from Notre Dame, was picked by the Chargers in the second round after slipping out of the opening round in part because of a poor performance in the national championship game against Alabama.

He also was part of a girlfriend hoax that drew national headlines.

The team pulled an end run and kept Te’o away from a large media contingent today.

These sports writers really have it out for Te'o... Here's hoping he does well and makes them eat their barbed words.

If I owned the Chargers or was their GM, I'd take away the media credentials of any writer who bashed Manti.

The Lennay jokes are never going to end until Teo takes the field and show whether or not he belongs in the NFL. At this level where millions are at stake, NOTHING is left to chance and guarantee with the watchful eyes of Teo's father, Chargers coaches, public relations specialists, lawyers, security, etc. Teo will NOT be allowed access to anyone except his immediate family or Charger management. With that kind of 24 hour babysitting Teo, should be able to perform to his potential and see if he can at least somewhat fill the shoes of Seau. Between skill and some luck, Teo might be able to generate a spark for the Chargers that could bring them into prominence once again
