Captain locked out of plane in flight as cockpit door jams

By Associated Press

LAST UPDATED: 07:21 a.m. HST, May 16, 2013

NEW DELHI » Air India says the cockpit door of one of its planes got jammed during a flight while the captain was using the toilet, forcing an unscheduled landing by the co-pilot in central India.

An airline statement says the captain couldn't return to the cockpit because the door was locked and that all efforts to open it, even from inside, failed during Tuesday's flight from New Delhi to the southern Indian city of Bangalore.

The co-pilot landed the plane at the nearest airport. The door was fixed by ground maintenance staff and the plane resumed its flight.

The airline said the incident posed no danger to the passengers.

Weren't pilots from Air india found sleeping while flight attendants manned the cockpit? I would strongly advise against flying on an Air India plane.

Not sure but maybe you are thinking about one of our local airlines that flew past Hilo and ended up being delayed by an hour.

On the bright side, at least both pilots didn't decide to take a piss at the same time. :)

Airplanes keep a crash axe in the cockpit so the pilots can escape the cockpit if the cockpit door gets jammed in a crash landing. Yokohama Rubber Company used to supply lavatory door locks that would trap passengers in toilets. The crash axe approach was not the preferred choice to get the passengers out. It was like a bad horror movie.
