Police seek man in suspected Kailua arson

Police were looking for a man in his 20s Saturday who is suspected of setting fire to a vacant Kailua house Friday night.

Police said the fire began at about 10:28 p.m. Friday when someone used an unknown accelerant to ignite the fire to a vacant house in the Enchanted Lake neighborhood.

The fire investigator estimated damage to the property at $54,000.

Fire Capt. Gary Lum said the house, at 1040 Kupau St., had recently been refurbished for sale. He said one wall was damaged in an explosion from gas buildup, but said the fire was immediately extinguished.

Police have opened a first-degree arson case.

Lum said witnesses gave acounts of seeing someone leave the scene.
