A 31-year-old man died at Waimea Falls Sunday after trying to help a woman in distress.

Fire spokesman Capt. Gary Lum said the man went into the water to try to help the woman near the falls and disappeared beneath the water.

Lum said his department received a call about the missing man from emergency services at 4:12 p.m. Sunday.

Lum said fire rescue and lifeguards participated in the search and the body was found about 25 feet below the surface of the pond at 5:20 p.m.

He said the woman was rescued by others.
