State imposes quarantine on bulls in Hawaii

All beef and dairy bulls coming into the state or moved between herds here must be tested for bovine trichomoniasis, under a quarantine order issued by the state Department of Agriculture Tuesday.

Ten infected herds in Hawaii — all but one on Hawaii island — have been detected since the disease was detected in bulls in the Kau District in 2011, the department said.

Trichomoniasis is a venereal disease that can reduce calf production when cows abort or reabsorb their pregnancies if infected.
