County cleans up Kihei sewage spill

An estimated 56 gallons of wastewater spilled out of three manholes in Kihei Monday after grease clogged the sewer line.

Although 40 gallons entered a storm drain, but Maui officials said no wastewater reached the ocean.

Maui County’s Department of Environmental Management reported that a wastewater overflow of about 56 gallons happened at 9 a.m. Monday on Kenolio Road. The overflow was stopped by 11 a.m.

Wastewater flowed out of three manholes fronting the Southpointe Apartments at 480 Kenolio Road. 

Department of Environmental Management crews cleared the line, removed all standing wastewater and disinfected the spill site.
