Highway Patrol: Texting teen causes wreck that injured cop

RAMONA, Calif. >> Authorities say a teen girl suspected of texting while driving caused a chain-reaction crash in San Diego County that threw a Chula Vista police officer from his motorcycle and left him with serious injuries.

California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Pennings tells U-T San Diego Wednesday there is evidence the teen was texting when she rear-ended a Chevy that was stopped to make a left turn on State Route 78.

Officer Nathaniel Walker was leading about 10 other officers on an instructional ride in the other direction. He hit the Chevy and landed on the hood of the girl’s car. He was flown to a hospital and is expected to recover.

The girl and the 61-year-old driver of the Chevy were also injured, but it was not clear how seriously.
