LAST UPDATED: 02:21 a.m. HST, May 31, 2013

A routine vehicle check resulted in the arrest of a 41-year-old man for auto theft and other charges early Thursday morning.

The office ran a check on a vehicle parked in the Keeaumoku area and learned that it was stolen, police said. A passenger in the front seat of the vehicle identified a man standing near the vehicle as the driver.

The suspect attempted to flee the scene but was caught and found to be in possession of a replica gun and drugs, police said.

We need to make laws that will put these offenders behind bars for a ]longer time. Otherwise, we just keep releasing them only to find them doing the same thing over and over again. It seems that our state's attitude when it comes to theft is very lenient. Thieves are habitual in their nature. Whether they steal cars or other property they will continue to do it. The only real deterrent is to take them off of the streets. They need to be given harsher penalties when they are convicted of another crime after being released. And not a token added couple of months. They need to serve some serious time.
