Maui High School students Mitchell Borge and Lawrence Paet captured fifth place in the national 2013 Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Finals in Dearborn, Mich. this morning.

Borge and Paet took 73 minutes and 58 seconds to repair a 2013 Ford Explorer XLTs, turning in a “perfect SUV” for the top-five finish, according to a statement from AAA Hawaii, an event sponsor.

The two-student team from Oregon reprised the state’s 2012 first-place win by finishing in 55 minutes and 57 seconds.

Teams from across the country were competing for a share of $11 million in scholarships and prizes. The amount won by the Hawaii team was characterized by AAA Hawaii as being “thousands of dollars,” though a specific number was not given.

Teams from Maui High have represented Hawaii at the national finals for at least 17 years and have placed in the top 10 for 11 of those years. Maui High also won national titles in 1995 and 2000. Last year’s team placed second.
