Gusty trade winds prompt advisories

Gusty trade winds today and Friday have prompted a high surf advisory for east shores and small craft advisories.

Forecasters say a high pressure system north of the islands is bringing winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 40 mph.

The winds are bringing surf on east shores of 6 to 8 feet today and Friday. Forecasters say strong, breaking waves and rip currents will make swimming difficult and dangerous.

The high surf advisory took effect at 6 a.m. today and is set to expire at 6 p.m. Friday.

Small craft advisories are also posted for other Hawaiian waters.

The winds should peak before the weekend, but will remain breezy into next week.
