Coast Guard suspends search for missing snorkeler off Maui

The Coast Guard suspended the search Thursday afternoon for a snorkeler last seen near Molokini Crater Tuesday evening.

Paul Blackburn, 56, from Illinois, was snorkeling with his son when he went missing at the snorkeling spot off south Maui. He was last seen at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials in the Coast Guard’s Honolulu command center were notified of the situation at 5:51 p.m, Tuesday.

The Coast Guard used boats and aircraft to search more than 448 square miles. Maui County and state personnel, fire boats, jet skis and helicopter crews contributed to the search.

The Coast Guard suspended the search at 1:25 p.m. Thursday.
