Maui firefighters extinguish brush fire on sugarcane land

A fire at Holomua Road and Hana Highway on Maui consumed approximately 26 acres of sugar cane today.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 12:49 and had the fire under control in about an hour. The fire was fully extinguished by 3:15 p.m.

The blaze occurred on land owned by Hawaii Commercial & Sugar Co., which estimated damages at around $100,000.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Police closed Hana Highway between Holomua Road and Kaimao Street in both directions for about one hour due to heavy smoke conditions.
