3 women climb out after vehicle plunges down Maui ravine

A vehicle carrying three women went down a 60-foot ravine on the Hana Highway near Puaa Kaa State Park on Tuesday, critically injuring one woman, a Maui County Fire Department spokesman said.

The three women in their early 20s climbed back up the ravine, even through one of the women suffered a right ankle injury. She went to the hospital in critical condition after firefighters stabilized her spine on a backboard as a precaution, firefighters said.

The accident happened about 6:30 p.m. as the women were driving back to Wailuku. The other two women suffered lacerations, the fire department said.

Firefighters from Hana and Kahului responded to the scene at mile marker 21.5 on the Paia side of the state park.
