Hirono: Immigration bill unfair to women

By Associated Press

LAST UPDATED: 12:45 p.m. HST, Jun 18, 2013

Hawaii U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono says a sweeping immigration bill being considered by the Senate is unfair to women in its current form because of educational and career inequities in other countries.

The Democrat said on the Senate floor Tuesday that a new merit-based point system to evaluate potential immigrants would bring inequitable treatment abroad into the United States.

She says the bill also reduces opportunities for family members of those already in the U.S. to immigrate using green cards. She says at least seven in 10 women come to the United States under the family system.

A Congressional Budget Office analysis said Tuesday that about 8 million people in the U.S. illegally would gain legal status under the Senate bill.

Short sighted thinking. The primary objective for allowing peoiple to immigrate shoudl be, what's best for the US not what's fair to women or any other group of people. Having educated people immigrate would assist the US in staying ahead of the world economically.

But what is the real solution? To let all uneducated women move to America, or to set foreign policy that would help educate women in their own countries?

There are so many hardworking immigrant women here in the US. So many phillipino nannies and nurses. Some of these women never had jobs in the countries they came from because they were very hardworking mothers, and many of them come here to work to support their families over there because they can make more here. If their husband loses his job over there, maybe she comes here to support him. It's about family often and a huge sacrifice for them to leave their homeland to help their families from over here. It's never black and white.

Since I don't vote in other countries, I'll limit my community to where I can participate in the political process. I wish Maize all the best in fixing the cultural and political shortcomings in other places so life can be fair. Now if she can squeeze some time in her schedule for her real constituents....

OMG now I have heard it all - an attempt to legislate gender differently because of what is happening in different countries. This is liberalism at an extreme moment. How about helping out all the poor people in our country first?

This whole immigration thing is BS. If you want to become a citizen of this country get in line, and if your here illegally then you are an illegal alien, you are a felon and should be treated as such, if you are what they like to call an anchor baby sorry you are an illegal alien also which makes you a felon and you should be deported. That said when you are back in your home country if you want to return to the USA get in line, do it the lawful and right way. Sounds kind of hard hearted well too bad that's life in the fast lane.

she never was the sharpest knife in the drawer, just always a good reliable AJA Democrat functionary. mazie, get with it, the immigration disaster bill only mildly adjust between "merit" and "family" overflow, with the merit admissions planned to rise to a mere 10% of the inflow. we don't need mexico or the philippines to become our new national manao. no more 8th grade educated folks with no skills who'll wind up consuming resources, with each of them being able to pull in every person with whom they have a DNA linkage. time to get immigrants WE need, rather than turning our country over to every miserable low ed wannabe in the world.

NO ONE should come to America unless they have a job lined up or family here working that can support them. If they don't get a job in say 6 months the go back where they came from. Pretty simple huh?

Not one bit of conern from the Senator about the magic legalizaiton of over 8 million illegals in the country? Aside from that, I think she is off the mark because when you look at which countries send us the most immigrants then we would see that educatioin opportunities in those countries are more equal than the Senator claims. I think she's trying to make a non-issue into an issue.
