Land Use Commission asked to rule on Turtle Bay expansion

The Defend Oahu Coalition is reviving an effort to block expansion of Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu’s North Shore.

The community organization filed a motion today with the state Land Use Commission asking that the agency hold a hearing to determine whether the commission’s 1986 approval to develop the resort on what had been farmland should be invalidated.

Defend Oahu argues that the resort’s owners failed to make good on several representations, commitments and conditions it made or agreed to in obtaining the development approval.

The organization filed a similar motion in 2008, but LUC members were split on the issue and failed to muster enough votes for a decision in 2010.

Since then, the Hawaii Supreme Court has ruled that an environmental impact statement pertaining to the resort’s development should be updated, and the resort’s asset manager, Replay Resorts, has refined its expansion plan.

A Replay representative could not be reached for immediate comment.
