KAILUA-KONA >> A Kailua-Kona man who ran over and killed his 3-year-old son with a pickup has been sentenced to three months in jail.

West Hawaii Today  reports 38-year-old Pedro Johanes Peter also was ordered to pay $1,161 in fines and fees, complete a parenting class, and perform community service by giving presentations on the proper use of child passenger restraints.

Peter in a plea deal last week pleaded guilty to negligent homicide, driving without a license, failure to have no-fault motor vehicle insurance and failure to have child restraints.

Police say the child, Joel Peter, fell from Peter’s truck when the boy’s sister opened a rear passenger door near a store driveway off Mamalahoa Highway.

Peter drove the child to Kona Community Hospital, which contacted emergency authorities.

Agree. He displayed extremely poor judgement and now will have to live with this forever and a young boy will never get to grow up. Usually when pictures are posted of criminals, you can just see the defiant, apathetic, filthy attitude but in the above picture, there is a lot of pain. This story is depressing.

This is the kind of reason why we have a lot of uninsured and unlicensed drivers. We obviously are very lenient to them. This guy killed his son through negligence and all he gets is three months. To add insult to injury it's as if he wasn't even punished for driving without a license and insurance. It's because of people like these that your insurance rates are so high. We have to pay for the costs from these uninsured drivers.
