The selection committee seeking a permanent replacement for University of Hawaii President M.R.C. Greenwood met for the first time this afternoon and said they are hoping to find a candidate with strong Hawaii ties.

UH Regent John Holzman, who chairs the seven-member committee, set up three working groups: one to recommend selection criteria; another to decide what kind of professional help will be needed for the search; and one to help organize outreach efforts with various stakeholder groups.

Holzman said the subgroups will be moving ahead under a “working assumption” that the committee is seeking a candidate with strong Hawaii ties.

“It’s not a decision, but what I would say is a working assumption that makes a lot of sense,” he said. “I think there’s a sense, not just among us, but among a lot of people in this state, that we’re looking for someone who not only appreciates these islands but hopefully will have the experience here, too, and know us as a people … and that’s something that’s hard to find,” he said.

He estimated the search could take six to 10 months.

Greenwood announced her retirement in early May, saying she wants to spend more time with family and deal with health problems. Her contract was set to expire July 31, 2015.
