Woman arrested after baby ingests drugs is released pending investigation

A 42-year-old Pearl City woman who was arrested after her 20-month-old child ingested dangerous drugs while in her care has been released pending investigation.

The child was taken to a hospital on Friday in critical condition.

According to police, the child was at the woman’s home when he got ahold of the drugs. Police did not specify what type of drug the child ingested.

The child’s mother was arrested the same day on suspicion of second-degree assault and released on Saturday.

According to Hawaii Revised Statutes, a second-degree assault charge can be applied if the suspect “recklessly causes serious or substantial bodily injury to another.”

The woman was also booked for a separate contempt allegation, for which she posted $150 bail.
