The federal Housing and Urban Development offices will be closed nationwide, including Hawaii, on Friday, as part of spending cuts, the agency said Monday.

The closure will mean a total of 27 employees connected with the Hawaii office won’t be at work.

“It’s all of us,” said Hawaii field office director Ryan Okahara.

Okahara said as a result of “sequestration,” there won’t be anyone in the office to answer telephone calls.

The agency is asking businesses and individuals to plan accordingly.

The closure on Friday is one of seven occurring this year at the agency, which provides services for the elderly, poor, homeless and disabled.

The agency shut down on May 24 and June 14 and will be closed on July 22, a Monday, and on Aug. 2, 16, 20 — all Fridays.

A number of federal agencies are exercising similar closures because of sequestration.
