Allegiant Air cutting 17 Honolulu-based flight attendant positions

Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air, which announced three months ago it would be suspending flights from seven mainland cities to Hawaii, now plans to cut nearly half of its Honolulu-based full-time flight attendant positions.

The union representing Allegiant flight attendants in their first-ever contract negotiations said the airline has informed those employees that it will cut 17 positions, or 45 percent, of the 37 full-time positions in Hawaii. The Transport Workers Union said the company is recommending that Hawaii-based flight attendants bid on open jobs in other cities and is offering to pay up to $3,000 in moving expenses. The TWU said the amount likely will cover only a portion of the relocation to the mainland.

Allegiant, which connects primarily secondary cities to leisure markets, said in April that it will cease flights due to "a seasonal hiatus" beginning Aug. 14 from Boise, Idaho; Eugene, Ore.; Phoenix; Spokane, Wash.; and the California cities of Fresno, Stockton and Santa Maria.

Jessica Wheeler, spokeswoman for Allegiant, said Tuesday that Boise and Spokane service will be resumed for the holiday season.

Three routes remain unaffected by the suspension of service. Allegiant still will offer flights between Las Vegas and Honolulu, and to both Maui and Honolulu from Bellingham, Wash.

They had a opportunity to cash in with the Hon-Vegas flight but blew it- all they had to do was to be competitive with Hawaiian and Vacations Hawaii. - Lower air fares or compete with Hawaiian fares would have benefited them. I heard they don't issue a reserve seat without a fee as well is charging you for every little thing. They'll soon be out of here if they don't try to go after the local crowd who go to vegas. The guys just don't get it.

Only problem is schedules are not met and often a day late, because their fleet of aircrafts are obsolete aircraft long ago shunted for reasons of fuel guzzling. Maintenance is their prime bugaboo and parts are hard to come by since they are older than all heck.

I flew them recently to Eugene. My flight went off well, though it was fairly spartan. Having said that, I have had family members get delayed several times, including once over 24 hours, then landing in another city and requiring a 12 hour bus ride down to Eugene. I would suspect the convenience of direct flights to towns like Eugene would cause customers to be willing to pay a bit more, in exchange for more reliability.
