Pedestrian hit by truck near Pali Highway tunnel

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 08:45 a.m. HST, Jul 07, 2013

A pick-up truck struck a 24-year-old man who was walking in the roadway on the Pali Highway Saturday night, critically injuring the pedestrian, police said.

The accident happened at about 10:40 p.m. near the Pali Tunnel in the Kailua-bound lanes.

Paramedics took the 24-year-old man, whom police said lived at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe, to the hospital in critical condition.

Police said the overhead lights in the area were not working Saturday night. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors on the part of the driver, a Kailua man.

Police said it is not known if the victim had been drinking.

Honolulu police closed Pali Highway in the Kailua-bound direction after the accident happened at about 10:35 p.m. The highway reopened at about 2 a.m.

Time to slow down when things are not normal. You can go below the posted speed limit depending on the conditions set forth.

Gotta wonder about the current crop of 20 somethings. It will be interesting to see if this group has a higher mortality rate from previous generations. The conditions of the over head lights is pretty irrelevant. The guy had no business walking in an area that has no sidewalks or road shoulders.

Overhead lights not working, most probably because someone stole the copper wire! Perhaps these folks who steal wiring from street lights could/should be charged with murder when something like this happens. Just a thought.
