Hilo is among 20 communities in the U.S. and Canada chosen via online voting, to receive a revitalization package from paint maker Benjamin Moore & Co.

Communities submitted videos, stories and impassioned pleas to paintwhatmatters.com and its Canadian counterpart, that received nearly half a million votes in the 2013 Main Street Matters campaign.

Supporters of some 130 communities rallied votes via social media.

"The incredible response is a testament to how strongly people feel for their community and we hope this movement continues to drive support for local businesses as every Main Street has a story,” said David Melancon, chief marketing officer of Benjamin Moore, in a statement.

The projects will begin over the summer and continue through early next year.

They are to be undertaken by Benjamin Moore, its longtime partner organization Make it Right, a network of independent retailers and local municipalities, small businesses, and local Chambers of Commerce, the company said.

Benjamin Moore will supply all the paint, stain and supplies for building facades, porches, railings, shutters and additional exterior building features.

Decisions on the areas to be painted will be determined jointly with town representatives and residents, and Benjamin Moore color experts will consult on color choices.

We have grown to love East Hawaii and voted for Hilo. It is a charming town but a bit shabby in parts so a paint job is great news. Thanks to Benjamin Moore.

'a bit shabby'?......it's a dump if you've lived here long enough!......believe you me, these 'landlords' are millionaires exacting unreasonable 'rents' (more like extortion) from clients........these 'landlords' are given special tax abatements....just to keep 'the charm' of the termite-infested, crumbling, dilapidated buildings from falling down on their patrons......Slow, you must really be a malahini!

you wouldn't expect the downtown skinflint land/building owners to cough up for a gallon of paint.....despite this, downtown Hilo will remain a backwater with absolutely NO progress nor growth....the 'old boys' want it that way.....'us stay first'!
