A 54-year-old man died at the hospital after crashing his moped into a telephone pole in Manoa this morning, Honolulu police said.

Police said the man was headed downhill on Woodlawn Drive near Alani Drive around 7:06 a.m. when he lost control of the 2005 white moped he was driving

He suffered “massive head injuries” and was transported in extremely critical condition to Queens Medical Center, where he later died, officials said.

Police said the man was not wearing a helmet, and that no other vehicles or occupants appear to have been involved in the crash.

It has not yet been determined whether alcohol, drugs, or speed were factors in the crash.

Police closed Woodlawn Drive between Waipuna Rise and Alani Drive until about 9 a.m. as Traffic Division officers investigated the scene of the accident.

The man is the 36th traffic fatality on Oahu in 2013, compared to 32 traffic fatalities at this time in 2012.

An increasing number of moped accidents/fatalities in Hawaii. The way these idiots zip and weave through traffic, speeding with their loud mufflers on our residential roads, racing each other for fun ,etc. its no wonder there are more accidents involving mopeds. I typically see much younger riders and druggie looking dudes on mopeds these days. It's time to enact more stringent guidelines for operating this death trap on two wheels especially when the riders behave like irresponsible punks.

They should at least require a license to ride one. It looks easy but people lose control easily or panic.

You are required to have a driver's license to operate a moped.

Was this the white moped that regularly speeds down Woodlawn with the illegal muffler and illegal adjustment that makes it go above 35 mph?

Speaking from experience, it takes only a wet road to lose control of a moped going over 30 mph.

Yup. Especially when making a turn and you just so happen to drive over the wet man hole covers. Front end slides out and you're folding the moped with a car just behind. Scary stuff.
