State flags fly at half-staff for former lawmaker

By Associated Press

LAST UPDATED: 06:21 a.m. HST, Aug 11, 2013

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie ordered flags at state offices and the Hawaii National Guard to fly at half-staff today in honor of a former state lawmaker who died last month.

Fukuda died last month at age 91.

Fukuda was a Japanese interpreter and translator for the U.S. Army during World War II. He was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal in 2010 with about 6,000 Japanese-Americans.

Fukuda was a House member in the first state Legislature, then went on to be U.S. attorney in the state.

Abercrombie says Fukuda set a standard for people in public service who followed him.

mike, you're right. All U.S. flags should fly half-staff for the Bossa Nova Queen.

Why half-staffed for just the politicians? Everyone in America has a part of its history.

So State Rep and U.S. attorney was a schmuck? I didn't know that. People should be so respectful to your name when you pass on.

This governor is abusing his power to fly the flags at half-staff. He obviously thinks politicians are better than the rest of us. Flying the flags at half-staff should be reserved for a national or state day of mourning. I have never seen or heard of another governor doing this for every politician that passes away. By doing it so often, it minimizes the significance of it. If the majority of people don't know why the flags are being flown at half-staff it probably shouldn't be done.
