The first named storm of the season has formed in the Central Pacific, far from Hawaii, this morning.

Tropical Storm Pewa was about 1,320 miles southwest of Lihue at 11 a.m. It is moving west northwest, away from Hawaii at 14 mph and has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.

Pewa will not affect Hawaii’s weather.

It’s the first named storm to form in the Central Pacific Hurricane Zone since Omeka in 2010. Storms that form in the Central Pacific are given Hawaiian names. Pewa means tail of a shrimp or lobster, according to the Hawaiian Dictionary.

Closer to home, a low-pressure system passing several hundred miles south of the islands is still bringing some increased moisture to the atmosphere and an increased chance of showers to windward and mauka areas, especially on the Big Island.
