A 61-year-old visitor from Germany died while hiking the Kalalau Trail, Kauai County officials reported.

The man was with a group of friends  on the trail Friday when he started feeling fatigued. The man collapsed near the 8 mile marker.

A pilot with a helicopter tour company saw what happened and radioed the Lihue Airport air traffic control tower to report the incident.

The Fire Department Air-1 helicopter responded at about 5:30 p.m. They flew to the landing zone near the eight mile marker and walked about 1/4 mile to the scene.

The victim had been given CPR by his friends, but did not respond. He was flown to Princeville Airport where paramedics confirmed the man had died.
