Roads closed in Kula because of barrel emitting chemical vapors

Maui police closed Kula Highway between Kula Ace Hardware and the post office Tuesday afternoon due to a barrel of chemicals that was emitting vapors that prompted some people to evacuate.

The top and bottom of Kamehameiki Road were also closed to traffic about 2:45 p.m.

Hazardous materials personnel investigated and determined from the barrel was hydrogen peroxide; samples from the barrel and confirmed it to be hydrogen peroxide, police said.

The container was secured and was to be disposed of by a hazardous material disposal company. .

Kula Highway was reopened at around 7 p.m. and Kamehameiki Road at around 9 p.m.
