A 49-year-old Puna woman was arrested Thursday morning in connection with an incident involving a report of a gun near an elementary school in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision, according to Hawaii County police.

Puna patrol officers responded to a 7:18 a.m. report that a woman at a residence near Keoneopoko Elementary School was brandishing a firearm and pointing it in the direction of the school.

No one was injured in the incident. Before the arrest, the school went on lockdown as a precaution.

Police arrested the woman on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening. She was taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continue the investigation.

Again put down a whole community because of the actions of a few.....SAD. Only good about the toilet that exist in your head is that you won't be visiting Puna soon. Reading your post convinces me you're scarier than Puna

The truth? "why is everyone pointing a gun" How is "everyone" the truth? And "Puna has always been lawless" Really? All of Puna? some parts? some people in Puna? High crime rates in some areas, maybe, but lawless? That kind of sloppy word choice is bound to offend some people.

Hawaiian Beaches is one of the rougher parts of Puna. Look at the photo of the arrested individual. It's not hard to conclude that illegal substances have been a part of her life. Paranoia and firearms make for sad episodes. Puna is a beautiful place. I'm happy to call it home. I wish more good stories could be highlighted in the media.
