Hawaii County police this morning arrested a 43-year-old Puna man for allegedly assaulting his 24-year-old son and sending him to the hospital.

Police said the two were involved in a fight 8:30 p.m. Monday. When officers arrived, the son ran into the forest and came out at 11 p.m. with substantial bodily injuries.

He was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was treated and released. Police arrested him on two unrelated bench warrants for contempt of court.

While police were securing the scene 7:09 a.m. Tuesday, the father came out pointing what appeared to be a rifle at responding officers.

Police recovered an air rifle, and arrested the father on suspicion of second-degree assault for the domestic incident and first-degree terroristic threatening for pointing the rifle at police.
