Senior Emily Hartong put down 13 kills and No. 9 Hawaii swept New Mexico State 25-17, 25-23, 25-15 in tonight's second match of the Hawaiian Airlines Classic women's volleyball tournament at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The victory gave Rainbow Wahine coach Dave Shoji his 1,106th career win, tying him with retired UCLA coach Andy Banachowski for most all-time wins in Division I women's volleyball. Shoji can break the record Friday night with a victory over Santa Clara (2-2).

In tonight's tournament opener, No. 10 UCLA held off Santa Clara, 25-21, 25-12, 21-25, 27-25. The Bruins (4-0), getting 19 kills from Karsta Lowe, meet New Mexico State (2-2) in Friday's 5 p.m. match.

New Mexico State got six kills each from Bradley Nahs and Aleisha Coates. The Aggies outblocked the Wahine 9-6, with Nash in on six.

Hawaii won the dig battle 37-30, led by Hartong's nine. Hartong also had two of the team's five aces.

It's crazy that this story brings up volleyball stories from 2011. I guess no one checks how this part of the web site works.

Crème puffs or competitive teams week in and week out. Shoji had the Crème puffs.
